Hong Purume

"The Trace" a Solo Exhibition by Hong Purume

Currently on exhibition

September 9th - 30th, 2024

Opening Party: September 4th, 5PM-9PM

The Trace, a solo exhibition by Hong Purume

The exhibition space has been meticulously arranged to create an atmosphere of calm and mindfulness, perfectly complementing Hong Purume’s unique approach to painting light with ink.

Her work, characterized by a minimalist focus on the interplay of light and shadow, fosters a profound meditative experience.

Each brushstroke of ink, masterfully applied, draws light from the depths of darkness, showcasing Hong Purume’s deep connection with her medium and the rhythmic nature of her creative process.

Artist Introduction

Hong Purume (b. 1966) was born in Seoul, Korea and completed her studies in Taiwan in 1989, consistently pursuing her extraordinary passion for oriental art. Since graduation, she has held 32 solo Exhibitions both domestically and internationally in cities like Geneva, Moscow, New York, Taiwan, Seoul, Busan, Daejong and over 300 group exhibitions in Moscow, Japan, USA, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore, and Korea.

Her mastery has been recognised at numerous competitions where she won awards such as the 1995 Korea Jinkyung Sansu Competition Grand Prize and the 2001 Young Artist Award at Gyeomjae Art Awards. In 2022, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) featured Hong Purume’s art for a public light installation to allow people to find healing and relaxation through her art.

Hong has consistently maintained a reputation as one of the leading artists in the Korean contemporary art scene who continues to create new dialogue based on her in-depth cultural and historical understanding of oriental aesthetics. Her mastery in working with unpredictable ink on Korean Hwaseonji (a traditional Korean paper made from plant fibres) stems from oriental art but her unique brush strokes evoke modern elements of landscape art.
