Lee Jae Hyung majored in Media Art at Yonsei University Graduate School and is based in Seoul. He has been conducting various material and formative experiments based on immaterial information. Subsequently, through his Bending Matrix series, which expands the structure of LED matrices into sculptural forms, he has participated in exhibitions and collaborated with various companies. He has also worked on projects utilizing AI, where projects have taken the form of public art in diverse space.
The artwork "Under the Hope" reimagines the Korean Ghost Whale, symbolizing life, health, and abundance. The image of a whale swimming in the deep sea conveys messages of freedom and hope.
Korean Ghost Whale: This species is uniquely called "Korean" among over 80 worldwide. It is critically endangered due to hunting and pollution in the 19th and 20th centuries. Since two were found off Ulsan in 1977, none have been seen along Korea's coasts
The artwork features a cat gazing out a window, with numerous LEDs on the surface displaying various digital content. As the videos flow over the piece's curves, it blends digital and analog emotions.
The imagined scenes seen through the LED window give busy city dwellers a brief glimpse of a nostalgic, childlike world. Additionally, the weather in the video reflects the forecast for the following morning, synced with the meteorological server.
